Hi and welcome to the 2nd week out of our six week makeover for the Fall One Room Challenge! We are tackling a very sad and drab tween girl’s room and turning it into a girly and glam hideaway for a very stylish 10-year-old (and future fashion designer/ animal rescuer/ architect/ inventor).
As we mentioned last week, we’ve got the extreme good fortune (or good planning, you know, however you want to look at it…) of being done with construction prior to this challenge starting, so the real hustle of this 6 weeks is going to be furnishing and decorating our newly renovated empty box. But since this was very recently completed, it bears getting you up to speed on where we started.
All of the cosmetic to-do’s needed to be checked off the list in this room. It had brown doors and trim (made of some sort of plastic, I think!) so we replaced and beefed up all the base boards, window and door casing, and added a crown moulding. We also primed and prepped the walls for wallpaper, painted the ceiling, and swapped the builder’s-grade ceiling fan for an ultra-girly chandelier, complete with a totally over-the-top ceiling medallion.
Here is the room shortly after it was cleared out and work on the trim began:
I’m excited for the treatment this vintage dresser is going to get. Almost as excited as I was to FINALLY say goodbye to these horrible walls. (We’ve lived here for 7 years without touching this poor room. Please don’t judge me).
We could not help but add this mega-girly ceiling medallion to the space.
Our house was built in 1991, and even though the builder made almost every hideous design choice in the book, there is a part of me (the historician/ nerd part) that wants to preserve at least a few things from the original home. I’m adamant that Ryan (my husband, who does all of the work on our house) keep the land-line phone jacks everywhere. I am the bain of his existence on this point, but seriously, they’ll be historic novelties one day very soon! To that end, I’m relocating an original dining room chandelier to this room. As soon as we moved in, I knew it couldn’t stay downstairs, but I also knew it would be perfect in a dressing room, master closet….or, yep, this is it. The girl’s room.
It got a good cleaning and we set to the task of hand-hanging about six million crystals. Word to the wise for anyone doing this- those pokey spikes are sharp and will do you serious bodily harm. Wear very tall gloves!
#worthit though. I’m actually disappointed with how this chandelier photographs…in real life it is sooo beautiful and striking! I love it!
Dyson was glad when the construction clutter cleared enough for him to resume his post overseeing the backyard squirrel population. I, for my part, kept my little collage of wallpaper and fabric taped to the wall. It’s necessary for motivation!
Next week we’ll show you the wallpaper…it is too lovely not to have it’s own post, but here is a peek!!!
GAH….so in love with it. Check out what our fellow guest participants are up to this week, and be sure to come back next Thursday for more!
xx

Thank you! We are excited about that find. The wood is really pretty but the top isn’t in good shape. I hate to paint it but we’ve found the most lovely shade of Farrow & Ball deep green to console me about doing it!
